It’s summer, the days are hot, the evenings balmy. One was at the sea all day long and hardly moved, much too hot. Gradually the sun goes down, the skin stretches a little bit of salt and sun – can you feel it?
Now would be the perfect time to go out and do something, but everything’s closed, right? No, not everything.
The night markets of the Côte d’Azur
As it is common in this region, every city, every village, and even every organizer designs its market differently. Sometimes there are real shopping markets, so-called marché de bouche, where you can buy fruit, vegetables, cheese, oil, olives and delicacies, sometimes there are pure marché artisanal, where you can find stands with leather goods, jewelry, clothes and bric-a-brac. Then again both are offered. And as always, it is almost impossible to find a summary on the Internet. Therefore, first of all a link with a small list.
But actually I want to tell you today about the
marché nocturne at Cap Esterel
I’ve been driving past the sign for the night market on Wednesdays for a few years already and have always wondered where it can be found. The sign pointed to the small road leading to the Pierre & Vacances resort in Agay. Up there? I thought until now that this was private ground. But meanwhile I got used to the French customs for some years, so I went up without further ado. And shortly later, disappointed, I went down again – there was nothing.
The signs kept being stucked stubbornly to the street lamps every Wednesday and I thought I’d try it again, but this time I’ll get out of the car and ask someone if necessary. Said, done and what should I say? It was great! So great that I bribed the man on next Wednesday to come with me.
What to expect
We arrived at sunset and please have a look at this fabulous scenery!
This is amazing, isn’t it? And that’s just the view from the parking lot on the Massif de l’Esterel! As we walked through the main entrance, we kept on being amazed:
At the market you’ll find cheese, sausage, bread and olive oil, all from Italy and in the broadest sense bells and whistles: jewelry, handbags, toys, tapenade in a hundred different varieties and my favorite stand: soap! I used to buy a piece of soap as a souvenir, but since we stopped using shower gel and shampoo in plastic packaging a few years ago, I buy our annual supply at the soap stands of the Côte d’Azur. (Positive side effect: In the morning under the shower I always think back to the place where I bought the soap – lovely).
When and Where
You can find the marché nocturne every Wednesday from about 16h to 22h at the holiday resort Pierre et Vacances Cap Esterel, 2975-3001 Boulevard de la 36ème division du Texas, 83700 Saint-Raphaël
A resort like this isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, I can understand that, I feel the same way. But I really like this one. The range of restaurants and bars on the site is also attractive for market visitors. There are about 8 pizza shops, plus restaurants, bars, a small supermarket – everything your heart desires. We had a good time and it was a lot of fun.
Help me build up a list of night markets: which marché nocturne have you been on? What did you particularly like?
